Asking Deep Questions

Great readers use deep questions to better understand and connect to the text.
Great conversationalists use deep questions to prompt meaningful discussion.

• Shallow (the opposite of deep) questions can be answered in one or two words.
• Example: "Is Jonas a boy or a girl?" or "Do you like Jonas?"
• Conversely, deep questions many have many possible answers and the answer goes beyond just a few words.
• Example: "Should Jonas have stepped up to protect the boy who was being punished?"
• As with all communication, try to use the most specific language possible!
• Example: "Should he have tried to protect him?" becomes   "Should Jonas have stepped up to protect the boy who was being punished?"
• No pronouns! (he, she, it)  Use specific nouns. (Jonas, Ms. Hernandez, the pencil)
